we are located in the old shell gas station in sawyer, michigan in harbor country.
built in 1950 by carl franzen, it operated as a full service gas station until early 2000s
we are situated on red arrow highway, also known as US 12,, which spans almost 2500 miles from aberdeen, washington to detroit michigan, where it serves as the only highway in downtown detroit. us 12 runs along the southern coast of lake michigan then across the indiana border into southwest michigan, from new buffalo to detroit. in 2004, the 209 miles of US 12 from new buffalo to detroit was designated as as a historic heritage route.
red arrow highway/highway 12 operated as the main road from chicago to southwest michigan, for chicagoans escaping the city in the summer and on weekends, until the chicago skyway was built, linking the two areas.
considered the 'hamptons of chicago', harbor country consists of a string of eight small towns just over the border in southwestern michigan -- grand beach, michiana, new buffalo, three oaks, union pier, lakeside, harbert and sawyer; most of which are situated on lake michigan.
we are lucky to have western sunsets over lake michigan, the next best thing after california sunsets over the pacific.
some famous harbor country residents include, mayor richard m. daley, roger ebert, gene siskel, and dennis farina to name a few.
